The sad saga of Sen. Larry Craig (R ID) is a chance to look deep into the workings of politics at a time such an inspection by all is necessary. With no sitting President or Vice President running for the top elected office in the US the gates have opened and the race is on. This, despite the general election still being over a year away. The fact that Bush has held the US up as an example for developing countries to follow has not gone as he obviously pictured in his mind. He seems quite sure that history will treat him well and that his greatest experiment – establishing a democratic government in a part of the world that such governments are an endangered species – will ultimately prove to be a stable base for like governments in the region to emulate.
Ain’t gonna happen. While students of American history from grade school through high school recall very little significant history in a country that has a fairly short one, the same age students in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other Muslim majority countries can recite the history of Islam and their respective countries in sharp detail. The word “crusade” used by Bush so ignorantly early on in this campaign is recent history in countries where the Crusades occurred not that far in their past.
But oddly enough in our country with all its freedoms and free thinking, only 2 parties control any sizable segment of government whether it be state, national or even local government we are talking about. In Europe, which was devastated by World War I and especially World War II, there is a respectable number of political parties that help keep government somewhat in control of itself. Can it be that from the ruins there arose a diversity that has the Euro currency trouncing the dollar while their armies are safe at home for the most part?
Which brings up Sen. Craig and the panic in the Republican party that he has brought home to them. And bring it home he has. The Republican takeover engineered by Newt Gingrich and company with their infamous “Contract for America” has turned into what many describe as a “Contract On America”. Personal indiscretions by former President Bill Clinton were pounced on, in the words of my father, “like a duck on a junebug”. Strong talk of impeachment for lying under oath, which Clinton obviously did, has carried on with big figure Republicans using the words “liberal” or “Democrat” or “Hillary” to scare American voters like the bogeyman does for kids. The simple mention of the names Clinton or Hillary are an easy cue to laugh for many so called Conservatives to this day.
Yet anybody who reads a paper even occasionally or watches any television newscast (other than on Fox News) can recall names of politicians that have been swept away by scandal and corruption. And those names have invariably been those of Republicans. A man who I deeply respect and voted for as long as I lived in New Mexico even got his name tainted by allegedly calling a federal attorney in New Mexico asking why a Democrat accused of some small crime was not being investigated and prosecuted. I cannot recall the name of Senator Pete Domenici (R NM) ever being linked to any sort of hanky panky.
In a state known for political scandal and corruption, Domenici has escaped any hard scrutiny. His recent announcement that for health reasons he would not seek another term has caused concern in New Mexico, a state he so ably represented for so long. But I think he also escaped a bruising over the purported call to the now-fired US Attorney because he himself is not known for loud denouncing rhetoric of opposition party members caught in their moments of indiscretion.
And Dennis Hastert? The unfortunate Rep. Mark Foley (R FL)? How about Skip Cunningham? Tom DeLay? Losers all and cause for overdue inspection and assessment of a party that loudly proclaims their moral superiority of the “liberals” and their Democratic party.
Larry Craig’s voice was one of the loudest and heard for the longest when it came to denouncing Bill Clinton. His obvious glee in persecuting the man is plainly obvious in video clips and newspaper stories of the time. His two-faced opposition to any matter related to gays or homosexuals having equal rights will remain talking points for many years – an ugly legacy for a man so obviously smart and talented.
And the Republican party – what a shameful shell of a once proud political powerhouse. Their promises to curb spending now ring hollow since they took control of Congress with a budget surplus accrued under the presidency of Bill Clinton. “Deficit” became a word not quite so ugly under Republican control as it was when the Democrats controlled Congress. And the payback for a loyal party member who worked hard and helped the Republican party succeed when they obviously did not deserve to? For Larry Craig it’s the cold shoulder, denouncements of him both whispered and shouted and no welcome mat anywhere.
Perhaps old wisdoms are not invalid wisdoms. Such as “Those who live in glass houses should not throw rocks”?
